From the outside, it doesn’t look like anything special, just a little country pub and lodging. But inside, a fire burns in the hearth (during the cool, dry season) of this warm and friendly weigh station, and people from the neighborhood meet to share stories and relax. Located in Kairi on the Atherton Tablelands, this is a family operation, and one of three businesses in this small, farming town. You’ll find Paul Wagner at work in the pub, and his amicable demeanor pervades the atmosphere. Whenever we stop by, we inevitably meet a local and have a friendly chat. Paul chimes in with relevant stories or jokes every now and again. It is the quiet gatherning place for locals in the town and it's surrounding farms. A small two-story structure, the hotel’s clean and simply furnished rooms are upstairs. Typical of these old country inns, you’ll share a bathroom and shower facilities down the hall. We recommend the Kairi Hotel for budget travelers seeking a quiet and simple rural experience. It’s a great base for day trips around the scenic Atherton Tablelands if you have a vehicle.
