The Trip
This trip combines three of the most popular activities (after seeing the Great Barrier Reef) in Cairns, to make a seamless scenic one-day trip into the Rain forest covered mountain behind Cairns.
The first half of the trip is via the Kuranda Scenic Train to the mountain village of Kuranda. This leisurely 90-minute trip winds through Barron Gorge, and provides great views of the gorge, numerous waterfalls, and tropical scenery as you wind your way up the canyon.
Once you arrive in Kuranda you will have time to explore this small mountain town. It’s filled with shops, cafes, and craft and art markets.
This way home starts with a ride on Skyrail’s gondola. Skyrail is the longest gondola trip in the world, up an over the rainforests between Kuranda and Cairns. This trip takes from 40-90 minutes, depending on how much time you spend at the three intermediary stops, where you have the chance to get off the gondola and explore the rainforest on short interpretive walks and displays.
At the base of Skyrail lies Tjabukai, an award-winning Aboriginal Cultural Experience. This popular activity has grown from a small Aboriginal dance group to a facility that includes seven separate theatres, focusing on a wide range of the history and culture of the local Aboriginal people.
