This half-day trip floats the Barron River through the Barron River Gorge, where you will see steep rainforest clad slopes rising up from beside the river. A hydroelectric dam regulates the portion of the river traveled and provides reasonably consistent water levels and rapids rated Grades 2 and 3, in other words, "moderate rapids with the need to hold on at times, and maintain control of the rafts." There are calm stretches between the rapids where you can catch your breath and admire the scenery. Raging Thunder considers this trip to be "a fantastic introduction to white water rafting." The actual time spend rafting is a bit over two hours.
Inflatable rafts are steered by a trained guide, with participants (yes, you!) using oar power to help guide and power the raft down the river. Usually from 5-8 people are in each of the rafts, and the number of rafts the company uses varies with the number of guests. A bus picks you up at your lodging, at around 10:00am in the Cairns area, and 8:30am in Port Douglas. The river is located about 15 minutes outside of Cairns. The minimum age for this trip is 13, and remember to leave your jewelry at home on any rafting trip you take.
