4-day Budget PADI Open Water Dive Course
Includes Two 1-day Great Barrier Reef Dive Trips, Osprey V

© Joel Groberg

The Course

This course combines two days of pool and classroom instruction with two 1-day trips to the Great Barrier Reef, where you will make four dives. Completion of the course earns you a PADI open water diver card.

The reef trips are aboard the Osprey V, a large, fast, stable, and very comfortable boat. © Joel Groberg Joining you onboard will be a number of other reef visitors; both certified divers and snorkelers.

Down Under Divetaches their classes in English, with printed instructional materials available in many other languages. Their campus is located just outside of the downtown area, within walking distance of a variety of lodgings (transfers to and from lodging anywhere in Cairns are included in the tuition.). The large and modern campus includes air-conditioned classrooms, showers, changing areas, and large training pool.

This course includes dives aboard Osprey V, a 98 foot Mono Hull. The dive trip included in the course is for 4 days (note: return to town overnight), and allows 4 dives.

The Boat

One of the newest boats in the area, the Osprey V represents the next generation of large, fast, comfortable dive boats. Launched in July of 2000, this sleek boat looks like a 98-foot version of an offshore racing boat, with a long sharp bow and deeply v-shaped hull.

The Osprey can reach speeds of 26 knots, and sensors on the hull detect wave impact and trigger computerized hull stabilizers. This boat rides very smoothly through chop and swell.

There is room for 120 passengers, and is entirely enclosed and air conditioned throughout. Separate gear rooms and decks designed for the needs of divers and snorkelers make it easy for both groups to get into and out of the water.
