3-Day SSI Open Water Dive Course
Includes 3-day/2-night Great Barrier Reef Trip, Reef Encounter
Are you an independent learner who wants to get the most out of every day you have to spend in Australia? If that description fits you, this might just be the perfect dive course for you!
While passing this course you can make up to 10 scuba dives, up to twice that of many other dive courses, while earning your Open Water Scuba Dive Certification.
This is a self-study course, offered in Cairns only through SSI and Compass Cruises. Prior to the course you will need to pick up the course text from Compass Cruises and study the theory and practice of scuba diving. (This text can also be purchased online, so you can study in advance.)
Before you can start diving you must pass the written test, which you can take on board the Reef Encounter, or at the Compass Cruises office (At a time and date that best fits your schedule.)
Once you have passed the written test, you will go on a 3-day trip out to the reef, where you will stay on the Reef Encounter. On board you will be in a class of no more than 4 persons, and you will make at least 6 and up to 8 ocean dives to complete your certification.
Compass recommends this course for students that have already done some introductory scuba diving, and know that they are comfortable diving. Being able to study independently is also important. While the text materials are not complex, you need to have the discipline to read and study. The upside of this is that you can do this where and when you want, at home, on some other trip; thatís your choice!

This course includes dives aboard Reef Encounter, a 115 foot Catamaran with a maximum of 4 student divers. The dive trip included in the course is for 3 days, 2 nights, and allows 10 dives.
The Reef Encounter is one of the newest and nicest liveaboard vessels operating out of Cairns. A large 115ft Catamaran, built specially for extremely comfortable liveaboard diving, it has ample room for up to 42 passengers. There are spacious deck, dining, and recreation areas for relaxing between and after diving.
The boat is air-conditioned thoughout. We especially liked the spacious and nicely outfitted cabins, many of which had ensuite bathrooms. She's also the only boat on this part of the reef with a heated spa, a great place to warm up after a night dive.
For more info about this boat, see the floorplan.
You will ride out to board Reef Encounter aboard Compass Cruises speedy and stable day boat, the Reef Experience.

About Compass Cruises
Compass Cruises is a locally owned and operated company. The owners, John and Lyndell, seem to be everywhere; on the boat, in town and in the office overseeing the operations. The company has been in business since 1988. They operate two different dive boats, the Compass, which takes one day trips, and also servers as the shuttle, taking divers to and from their live aboard boat, the Reef Encounter, which stays for long periods out on the reef.
The company has a diverse set of offerings with options to suit folks and a wide range of budgets. Scuba divers and snorkellers seeking a luxurious live aboard experience can enjoy the top deck club cabins and services and even fly out to the boat on a helicopter. Budget travelers can enjoy a day trip on the reef at the lowest price around, and will find that Compass budget live aboard options are also a great value.
