This trip is aboard Poseidon III, an 85 foot Catamaran with a maximum of 60 divers and a Dive Staff of 4. It is for 1 day, and allows 3 dives.
Departure Information
Departure is from Marina Mirage, Port Douglas at 8:10 AM every day, return time 4:00 PM.
Trips do not run 7/25/2007 to 5/15/2008.
The Dive
This trip is the only one-day reef trip that offers the chance of sharing the company of Dwarf Minke Whales, a truly remarkable experience.
As done with all dwarf Minke whale trips, when these whales are encountered snorkelers go in the water in small groups strung along a floating line.
 The whales always seem to be attracted by floating snorkelers, and will come and approach them quite closely.
The Poseidon’s speed and range takes you into the southern edge of the area where these whales are encountered. This means that the whales are not encountered as consistently as they are on the longer live aboard Minke Whale trips. On the longer trips the encounter rate is over 90%, on Poseidon’s one-day trip the encounter rate is nearer 50%.
Still, if you only have a day, this is the only way to go, and even if no whales are encountered you have the opportunity to enjoy 3 dives or hours of snorkeling on the some of the best parts of the Great Barrier Reef that can be reached on a day trip.
Keep in mind that Minke Whale trips are seasonal, from late May to Late July, a period that the whales migrate to this part of the Great Barrier Reef.
The Boat
The Poseidon III is a brand-new boat, launched in April 2001. This 85-foot power reef catamaran, a style of boat designed for swift, smooth travel and maximum passenger space. The boat was custom built for Poseidon, and the design reflects the input of an experienced family operation, and make the boat a quicker, more comfortable and convenient dive boat. While licensed for 90 passengers, the company limits it's trips to 60 to allow for plenty of space for everyone.
Features like changing rooms, an extra large dive deck, fresh water showers, and an air-conditiioned main salon make this boat a great choice for assuring a great day on the reef.
