One-day Pelorus and Orpheus Island Dive Trip Remote Area Dive |
|
This trip is aboard Coral Gypsy, a 38 foot Mono Hull with a maximum of 10 divers and a Dive Staff of 3. It is for 1 day, and allows 2 dives.
Departure Information
Departure is from Your Townsville lodging (free pickup), Townsville at 6:00 AM Wednesdays, return time 5:00 AM.
The Dive
Morning pickups for this trip start about 6:00am. You will take a vehicle shuttle to the small town of Lucinda, about 1˝ hours drive north of Townsville. The boat trip out to Pelorus/Orpheus Islands takes about 35 mins from Lucinda.
Pelorus & Orpheus Island National Park are mid shelf reefs on Australia’s famous Great Barrier Reef, and home to James Cook University’s research station. The region offers incredible biodiversity with 310 species of hard and soft corals, diverse marine life including turtles, manta rays, sharks and over 990 different types of fish. Dive sites include Black Coral Wall, Bar Stool Bombie, Bat Caves, The Maze, Moon Pools, and Trenches. Coral Gardens offers an excellent drift dive. All dive sites offer their
own unique features with no two sites being the same. Depths average 12-15m, so there is something here for divers and snorkelers alike, regardless of experience level.
Out there you will have time to do two dives and snorkel in between them. There’s a simple but very nice lunch and afternoon snack as well. All told a very great day out on the reef!
The Boat
The RadDive II is a boat that's perfectly suited to it's purpose. This 13 Metre (40-foot) boat is outfitted for the diving and camping safaris and dive courses that Remote Area Dive leads in the Pam Island group.
She's nothing fancy, just a fast boat that rides cleanly in the water and makes for easy diving. We like the full-length shade, the ladder that let's sun-seekers bask on the top to catch the rays. The low sides and stern of the boat makes entrances and exits from the water.
This boat also carries a zodiac, which is also used to get to the less easily accessed dive sites.

About Remote Area Dive
Remote Area Diving was founded by two longtime friends and PADI dive instructors back in 2000. Much like DiveTheReef.com, the initial plan was to enjoy life, and maybe get to go diving for free, but after a couple of years, a formula of combining great diving, qualified instruction, small group sizes, and camping on remote tropical islands proved to be a great product, and the company has been busy ever since.
Amongst the friendly experienced dive professionals at RAD there are two registered nurses and a qualified chef; you can be sure that you are in expert hands in all aspects of their service!
