Rum Runner Cairns

© Rum Runner Cairns

Book This Trip

This trip is aboard Rum Runner, a 66 foot Mono Hull Sailboat with a maximum of 16 divers and a Dive Staff of 5. It is for 5 days, 4 nights, and allows 12 dives, plus 2 night dives.

Departure Information
Departure is from Marln Marina, Cairns at 2:30 PM Fridays, return time 10:00 AM.

The Dive

Diving in this section of the Coral Sea is a great experience for experienced adventurous divers. This trip visits Holmes Reef, a reef system lying some 90 miles outside the Great Barrier Reef. Due to it's isolation the reef has incredible visibility (always over 30 meters) and abundant large pelagic fish. Divers have observed the reef sharks here at shark feeds for 10 years, and it is a spectacular sight.

We can't think of many four-day trips where you can get up to 8 - 9 more amazing and adventurous dives. We emphasize the term "adventurous" as any open ocean trip can get bumpy, and once outside the Great Barrier Reef there is no protection from ocean swells on the trip out or back to Holmes Reef. While the diving is always amazing, the most certainty of a comfortable trip would be between October and April, our less windy months.

The Boat

Rum Runner is a 20m (66 ft) motor sailing schooner, built in 1984, with a nearly indestructible fiberglass hull.

The boat will accommodate up to 16 guests in twin bunk and 4-share cabins, with the beds in each cabin set up bunk style.. As typical with sailboats, the cabins are not spacious or very private; they are for resting and sleeping. The common areas include a dining area and both covered and open decks.

Overall we found the Rum Runner to be a comfortable sailboat, well suited for adventurous divers. It is by no means a luxury dive boat. Those seeking comfort and luxury should look for a different vessel.

Overall, Rum Runner is a comfortable sailboat, well suited for the adventurous. It is by no means a luxury dive boat. Those seeking privacy and luxury should consider trips on another boat.

In late 2005, Rum Runner was brought by Cairns Discount Diving Pty Ltd, and put back into service for the overnight GBR market (Great Barrier Reef - Cairns section) , and has been available for Charter's to the Coral Sea Reefs and GBR Ribbon Reefs for the past 12 years. Captain Richard and PADI Course Director Masa have worked these reefs since 1995, both working on Rum Runner when she did regular runs to Holmes Reef, and together for the past 12 years on Charters.
