This trip is aboard Osprey V, a 98 foot Mono Hull with a maximum of 80 divers. It is for 1 day, and allows 3 dives.
Departure Information
Departure is from Marlin Jettty, Cairns at 8:30 AM every day, return time 5:00 PM.
The Dive
This trip starts with a quick 75 minute ride out to one of the four reefs that the Osprey visits (Norman, Hastings, Saxon and Michaelmas Reefs). During the day you will dive on two of these reefs. Due to the quick trip out divers will have time to make three scuba dives. First time reef visitors should take the optional tour in the semi-submersible boat, a high tech version of a glass bottomed boat, which gives great views of what's up underwater. (We hope you'll be encouraged by the amazing sights to put some gear and get wet!)
This is one of just two dive boats with live musical entertainment on board, which makes for a unique and festive atmosphere! This trip is especially popular with young backpackers, and families or the less young-at-heart may find other trips more suitable.
The typical composition of a group on this trip is 1/5 divers and 4/5 snorkelers. About half of the snorkelers take an introductory scuba dive.
The Boat
One of the newest boats in the area, the Osprey V represents the next generation of large, fast, comfortable dive boats. Launched in July of 2000, this sleek boat looks like a 98-foot version of an offshore racing boat, with a long sharp bow and deeply v-shaped hull.
The Osprey can reach speeds of 26 knots, and sensors on the hull detect wave impact and trigger computerized hull stabilizers. This boat rides very smoothly through chop and swell.
There is room for 120 passengers, and is entirely enclosed and air conditioned throughout. Separate gear rooms and decks designed for the needs of divers and snorkelers make it easy for both groups to get into and out of the water.
