6-day PADI Open Water and Advanced Certification Course
Includes 4-day/3-night dive trip, OceanQuest

© Deep Sea Divers Den

The Course

This course combines the PADI basic dive certification course, and the PADI advanced certification course, with a 4-day/3-night dive trip on the Great Barrier Reef aboard the Ocean Quest.

The first four days constitute the basic certification course, which consists of the standard 2 days of pool and classroom instruction, followed by four ocean dives. The advanced course will take up part of the final two days, with self-study mini-courses in a number of dive specialties and several course dives. © Deep Sea Divers Den Even with all this happening there will still be time for at least 2 additional recreational dives.

All told a snorkeler entering and passing both parts of this course will earn an advanced open water scuba dive certification, make up to 13 dives, and have one great time out on the reef! The minimum age requirement for this course is 12 years of age. (Less than 18 years of age requires signed parental permission.)

Deep Sea Divers Denís teaching facilities include a recently completed training pool, air-conditioned classrooms, changing rooms, gear lockers, showers and restrooms. Their campus is located on the edge of town, and a courtesy bus will transport you to and from your lodging.

English speakers can take this course course starting any day of the week except Wednesdays and Sundays. If your English is not reallly strong Divers Den has written course materials available in almost every language. This course is also taught in Japanese with new courses starting every Wednesday and Saturday. A course taught in Korean is taught starting Wednesday every week.

This course includes dives aboard OceanQuest, a 117 foot Catamaran with a maximum of 10 student divers. The dive trip included in the course is for 6 days, 3 nights, and allows 11 dives, plus 2 night dives.

The Boat

OceanQuest is an extremely comfortable liveaboard. Sheís twin-hulled catarmaran, with three decks, giving everyone lots of space, both in the cabins and in common areas, such as the lounge, dining area, dive deck and sun decks.

The boat's just been through a major refitting, so everything is nice and shiny and new. The cabins are both spacious and comfortably outfitted. Each cabin has a private bathroom/shower, TV, bar fridges, even an internal phone system!

There are a mix of double, twin, and four-share cabins to suit any personís needs, and the boat can sleep up to 48 divers and snorkelers in comfort. At 35 metres (117 ft) in length, the boat makes for a very stable and comfortable nightís sleep.

For more info about this boat, see the floorplan.

About Deep Sea Divers Den © Deep Sea Divers Den

Deep Sea Divers Den is one of the oldest, largest, and most experienced dive operations in Cairns. Their dive school is one of the two largest such operations in the world, and this year marks the debut of their newly refurbished facilities, and a new dive boat, the ReefQuest II. Besides running the full range of certification courses in four languages, they also operate three dive boats on a daily basis.

The Divers Den has been in operation since 1975, and the size of their operation allows them to do much of their staff training, boat, and equipment maintenance in house. Someone walked into our office recently who was certified and dove with DSDD in 1982, and while you might barely remember what you were doing in '82, Susan has fond and vivid memories of her dive experience.
