The
Far Northern Reefs: Australia’s Ocean Outback
Expedition Diving: Remote and pristine reefs
The Far Northern Reefs are aptly named; they make up the northernmost
portion of the Great Barrier Reef, over 200 miles from Cairns and Port
Douglas. This is a huge region with over 600 reefs and offers spectacular
diving. Due to the remote location, it sees very little diving. It lies
offshore from one of the least populated and wildest areas of Australia,
the Cape York Peninsula. This area has the greatest species diversity
of any region of the Great Barrier Reef; more species of organisms are
found here than anywhere else along the reef.
7 to 10-day trips, October and November only:
Just a few 7 to 10-day trips are offered each year, during the months
of October to December. This is when dive conditions are at their absolute
best, and allow for diving on both the outer western edges and protected
reef flats. This time of year is when much of the reproduction occurs
on the reef, so along with a huge diversity of life, there is lots of
interesting animal behavior that is not seen at other times of the year.
All the new young life in the water also draws in filter feeders such
as whale sharks and manta rays. The diving is rich and varied.
Scientists have noted four distinct reef bioregions here, some known for
their diverse corals, fish life and abundant sea turtles, others for their
rich and distinct diversity of bottom life.
Limited availability, plan ahead
The Far Northern Reefs have to considered adventure diving at it’s
very best. The trips visiting the area are very popular, and are often
sold out months in advance. We advise you to think well ahead when planning
your trip to the Far Northern Reefs.
Getting there and back
Due to the distance required to travel here the dive trips will have one
or both legs of the trip be a low altitude flight to Lizard Island or
Lockhart River, two remote rural airstrips on the Cape York Peninsula.
This saves you time, and gives you a chance to see this beautiful coastline
from the air.
