What reef region are you going to visit? The reef is a big place, and in this area has several distinct regions, each with it's own characteristics. Check out our Reef Regions section to help choose the region that suits you best.
How many people are going to the reef with you? -There are boats here that take barely a dozen divers out to the reef, others that take nearly 300 people out the reef.
How many dives do you want to make? - Depending on the trip you select, you can make from 2 over 20 dives. Some one-day trips using fast boats leave you time to make three dives, others only two.
What are the skills and interests of your companions? - What suits you well may not suit them well.
How big/fast is the boat? - Both of these factors relate to your comfort on boats. Because all day boats operate inside the reef there are rarely heavy seas, the reef screens them out. Most of the anchorages are very well protected. Bigger boats are generally more stable, faster boats cut down on the time you are traveling and get you out to more distant locations.
Whats included and whats extra? - What is important to you, hot showers, wetsuits, guides, wine and cheese after you dive? Some of these are included in your fare, while others are extra. Decide what is important to you when you select a dive trip.
Price Range - The lowest priced reef trip is US$30, and the price can go as high as US$4,000.
Service Level - Some trips you are left to your own devices, other trips have extra staff to assist divers. Extra service costs money, trips with the highest level of service are generally the more costly ones.
How many dives can you make? - Depending on the one-day trip you choose, you will be able to make between one and three dives. On some of the multi-day trips you can make four or even five dives each day, if you are a keen or energetic diver you may want to opt for the opportunity to dive more. We urge you to be smart, and monitor how you feel, sometimes the wise thing to do is to pass on a dive and enjoy the following dive more.
Is this a trip that caters to just divers, snorkelers, or reef visitors? - Some boats take mixed groups; others specialize, and cater to just one of these groups. Make sure the trip you select caters to the interests and skills of you and your
companions. Listed below are some questions you may want to consider as you define your search for the ideal reef trip.
