Detailed Trip Itinerary for Deep Sea Divers Den, 4-night Minke Whale/Ribbon Reef Expedition

With Minke Whales the itinerary of the trip is often dictated by the whales, they are highly mobile within their relatively small home range, so encounters can happen at any time, and last from a few minutes to many hours of in water time. Whenever possible Oceanquest's skipper tries to stick to the itinerary below, but typically a few dives are replaced by extended in water encounters with the whales.

Day 1 (Friday)

You’re journey starts here! Pick up from your Cairns city accommodation will be at 8:00am. You'll ride on Divers Den's day boat for an hour to meet up with Oceanquest, your home on the reef for the next 4 nights. Once we have you all checked in and set up with your dive and snorkel equipment, you will travel out to Norman Reef to make two dives. After that you can relax, and enjoy the ride as the boat steams overnight to the northern region of the Great Barrier Reef.

Day 2 (Saturday)

Wake up to the sun rising over Ribbon Reefs section of the Great Barrier Reef. The Ribbon Reefs are the winter home range of dwarf minke whales, and today will offer the best chances of having an in water encounter with these remarkable animals.

Today you will enjoy four dives at various dive sites, including one night dive, where the reef transforms itself into a completely different setting with all new nocturnal marine life just will enjoy up to five dives at various sites on the upper Ribbon Reefs, including one night dive, when the reef will transform itself into a completely different setting with all new nocturnal marine life just waiting to meet you. This pristine and unique reef system is an underwater playground teaming with marine life, a real natural wonder for you to explore and enjoy!

Day 3 (Sunday)

The weekend kicks off with more diving and snorkeling opportunities throughout the Ribbon Reefs. Today you will have the opportunity to explore some of the most pristine and untouched areas of the Great Barrier Reef including the world famous Cod Hole. The Cod Hole is home to a family of large Potato Cod. Be surrounded by these intriguing and friendly creatures as you immerse yourself in their underwater habitat for a truly unforgettable experience. Up to five dives are included in today’s itinerary, including another night dive.

Day 4 (Monday)

Explore more of the Great Barrier Reef at various dive sites along the Ribbon Reefs over five incredible dives. The reef locations that we visit are home to many tropical fish species and offer magnificent viewing of bright mesmerizing coral less frequented by any other boats. Today we will conduct an exploration dive as well as visit the world renowned Steve’s Bommie, one of the most pristine dive sites the Ribbon Reefs’ has to offer. On completion of your final night dive Oceanquest will steam south, back towards Cairns.
