Reef Report for Thursday, January 10, 2002
Nothing Less Than Perfect = Perfect
Conditions have been nothing less than perfect this week with visitors to our Great Barrier Reef walking away with smiles from ear to ear.
Visibility of up to 20 metres was experienced at ‘Fish Market’ where Passions of Paradise were moored.
One lucky group of certified divers came across three lionfish. Introductory divers were treated to an array of small damselfish, blue-spotted lagoon rays and schools of spangled emperors.
Passengers onboard Taka II were also spoiled this past week, they sighted 12 killer whales half a mile from the boat at Opal Reef. Visibility at Osprey reef has been up to 30 metres with a pleasant water temperature of 30 degrees C. A small group of avid divers were lucky enough to spot 3 Manta rays cruising past them as they explored the reef. The divers were following the graceful giants when they turned around and glided directly over the top of the spectators. Also spotted at Osprey reef was a White Mouth Moray Eel and a Leopard shark.
Conditions are expected to remain calm with the NW-NE winds blowing a gentle 10 - 15 knots; perfect for diving!
The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
