Reef Report for Wednesday, October 18, 2000

Nature’s Elements Forecast Reef Rebirth

Wind, rain, and sunshine—we’ve had it all this week! Despite 20-knot winds at The Fish Market mooring, dive boat Passion of Paradise had 15 metres visibility. Divers have really begun to notice increased activity in the schooling fish as breeding season begins. © Great Barrier Reef Enterprises Jason and Bevan onboard the Coral Reeftel also reported increased visibility, with 15-20 metres at Thetford Reef. On one night dive they spied four cuttlefish, a Humpheaded Maori Wrasse, an octopus, and its baby! Crew on both boats noted a sudden increase in surface water temperature to a very pleasant 27° Celsius.

Our far northern reef explorer, Nimrod Explorer had 20-30 metres visibility at Cod Hole this week. At another dive site, the Snake Pit, they had 15 metres. Resident Loggerhead Turtle, Mrs. Robinson, posed for underwater photographers as a Manta Ray, which was three metres across the wings, played with divers. The magical interaction lasted for just over 10 minutes! Two white-tip reef sharks, a Moray Eel, and a school of 30 batfish also joined the fun. Wow!

Moderate east-southeasterly winds will blow 15 knots over the weekend, and you can expect a few isolated showers.

Happy diving!
