Reef Report for Thursday, December 7, 2000

Choppy Surface Leaves Calm Depths

It’s been a little on the wet and windy side this week. The sea conditions were a little lumpy and bouncy, but should greatly improve by Sunday. Winds that have been blowing southeasterly will shift and blow southeast to northeast. © Great Barrier Reef Enterprises Isolated showers will continue.

Visibility has remained good, with 20 metres at Moore Reef. Passengers aboard Sunkist had a good time despite the 30-knot winds during the week. Nudibranch and flatworm sightings provided a special treat for introductory and certified divers alike. The Fish Market had 10 metres visibility, where divers on Passions of Paradise saw many yellow tailed fusiliers. There were several mackerel and tuna circling divers and a shy clown triggerfish was spied at 12 metres. Despite winds whipping up the surface, good visibility remained below. Skipper Russell commented on similar visibility and sightings at Milln Reef this week, saying that certified divers were treated to a granddaddy Moray Eel at Tracey’s Bommie. When I asked why he thought it was a granddaddy he said, "Cause it was HUGE!"

Happy and safe diving everyone.
