Reef Report for Thursday, February 14, 2002

Herds of Buffalo (wrasse) Spotted on the Reef

It has been another hot week and our prayers for rain still unanswered. The weather people do predict showers and thunder storms this weekend, with winds blowing north east to south east 15 to 20 knots. © Great Barrier Reef Enterprises Hopefully it won’t be too lumpy out there.

This past week however conditions have been fabulous and marine life sightings plentiful. On board Reef Magic certified divers at Moore Reef had 10 metres underwater visibility. They did 2 drift dives along the wall and reported large schools of fish including a school of 40 buffalo wrasse.

Passions of Paradise certified divers this week were lucky enough to see a White Tip Reef Shark in 12m of water at the Fish Market. A bright yellow Coral Rabbit Fish was spotted also, along with rainbow-coloured damselfish. Introductory divers saw a juvenile Barramundi Cod, as well as several crown squirrelfish.

Scubapro experienced 10 to 15 metres visibility at Flynn reef this week. Instructors were kept busy, not only with the certified divers but also with an increased number of snorkerelers on board. Dive staff led snorkel tours a plenty, as everybody got to join in the fun of the reef.

(C) Pro Dive Cairns The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
