Manta Mania on the Reef
T'was a glorious Monday afternoon, just past. While MV Scubapro was quietly moored at Milln Reef, Skipper Dave on deck watch chanced upon seeing a dark shadow gliding under the clear sea water.
"MANTA! MANTA! MANTA!" The crew and guests heard excited cries from above. Dive Supervisor Scotty and Instructor Deano wasted no time and dove straight into the water with fins and mask in hand. A rare opportunity to observe this amazing creature up close in their natural environment was at hand, and a few more jumped in to join the manta ray. Scotty later reported that he was overwhelmed by the creature’s 3-metre wingspan, and its effortless ability to maneuver its gigantic body in the water. The Manta was extremely inquisitive, spending half an hour circling the six snorkelers before cruising off into the big blue waters.
With water temperature averaging around 30 degrees, people have a better chance of seeing these creatures now than during the colder months.
The weather is going to continue being sultry with scattered showers over the weekend. Southeasterly breezes will blow at 10-15 knots.
The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
