Reef Report for Saturday, March 11, 2000

Dead Calm Delight

Despite the gray clouds recently smothering Cairns’s hillsides, the ocean has been treating dive crews and guests to flat and calm conditions. Skippers reported glass outs (dead flat water) on all reefs. © Great Barrier Reef Enterprises Skipper Ralph, on Ocean Quest, told us that his dive guests enjoyed 20 -30 metres visibility at The Cave site, on the northern end of Norman Reef. Strong currents attracted a group of extremely frisky Maori Wrasse. The Maori males apparently played games of chase with the smaller fish, exciting divers with their activity and dazzling them with their brilliant colors.

Kalinda crew on Flynn Reef reported excellent visibility, as did Passion of Paradise at Clam Gardens on Upolo Reef. Guests this week on board this fantastic day vessel saw many Blue Patch butterfly fish and a seven-foot Lemon Shark. They too experienced quite a strong current, but warm waters and no surface chop.

Weather authorities predict an increase in ocean breezes, with south -southeasterly winds increasing to 15- 20 knots on the weekend--a noticeable change from this week’s dead calm conditions.

(C) Pro Dive Cairns The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
