Reef Report for Thursday, March 14, 2002

Lumpy and Bumpy Above, Warm and Toasty Underneath

The lumpy and bumpy conditions throughout the week have failed to deter avid divers from visiting the Australia’s main attraction. The winds have been ruffling feathers with most sites experiencing winds up to 20 knots and anything from 10-15 metres visibility.

Reef Magic took visitors to Saxon Reef, where passengers were treated to sightings of large nudibranchs, turtles and reef sharks. © Great Barrier Reef Enterprises A pair of lionfish dancing around the coral wowed passengers taking the guided snorkel tour.

Passions of Paradise reported calm breezes and lots of sunshine where they were moored at Paradise Reef. Certified divers kept out of trouble whilst watching a Titan Triggerfish nesting in shallow waters. These fish can be quite territorial when nesting, and care must be taken to give them space. Introductory divers were "introduced" to yellowtail fusiliers, sixbar wrasse and harlequin tusk fish.

The weekend should see conditions calm a little, with SE winds dropping to 15 - 20 knots by early Saturday afternoon. The water has been a toasty 30° C, so everyone should be thinking about getting his or her toes wet!
