Reef Report for Friday, March 2, 2001

Abigail Stirs Things Up!

Earlier in the week, the presence of Cyclone Abigail off the coast made for great uncertainty in town, as everyone watched the storm system edge towards Cairns. Plans made for the storm were thankfully not needed, as Abigail stalled off the coast and spun itself out. © Great Barrier Reef Enterprises Still winds and rains leading the storm reduced visibility and diver comfort on the reef.

As Cyclone Abigail ceased to be threat, we saw the diving community return to norm. Day boats and liveaboards have been running as normal, and despite lumpy conditions passengers have been coming back with smiles on their faces.

It was 15 knots out at Paradise Reef and certified divers on board Passions of Paradise were treated to viewing some barred rabbitfish along with some long-nosed butterfly fish. The introductory divers played with the ever-friendly Anemone fish.

On board Scubapro this week, dive certification students have been thrilled with the activity of the blue spotted rays. Quite a few sightings have been made. Visibility has been around 10 metres, however it does look to increase.

The wind will maintain its steady breeze at 10 to 15 knots. A few scattered showers are also predicted.

(C) Pro Dive Cairns The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
