Funding Boost for Protection of the Great Barrier Reef
The Australian government announced increased funding for the protection of the Great Barrier Reef today. The additional 20 million dollars comes at a great time, as it will enable the implementation and enforcement of the new expansion of the protected green zones, which as of July 1 will protect one-third of the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, responsible for the development and implementation of the plan, announced the increased funding, which will be spent as follows over the next three years:
-$13 million for implementation of the new protective plan.
-$6 million for water quality monitoring.
-$900,000, for the control of Crown of Thorns starfish.
About the GBRMPA funding increase.
