Whales Delight Reef Visitors Again This Week
It has been another fabulous week on the reef with wind conditions easing to 10–15 knots and whales spotted everywhere.
Skipper Russel on Scubapro II had to stop the vessel when two humpback whales were spotted playing up front.
They were between Fitzroy and Green Islands. No one minded the delay, as everyone enjoyed a fabulous performance by the whales from a very close distance. To top it off the group also had fantastic dive conditions on Flynn Reef, with 15 m visibility and sightings of white tip reef sharks cruising and turtles grazing on the algal beds.
Passengers on Tusa Dive also watched humpback whales spouting water and surfacing 40 m away from their boat twice this week.
Certified divers with Reef Magic at Thetford Reef were thrilled by a large school of fusilier and spangled emperor. The introductory divers on their dive came across a Lionfish as well as a couple of turtles. The visibility was 15 m with SE winds 15 to 20 knots and with blue sky and sunshine all day.
The forecast for this weekend is fine, sunny and with a little wind at 10-15 knots.
The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
