Reef Report for Thursday, September 13, 2001

Rays and Sunshine Brighten the Week

The Far North has definitely been the ideal place to be this week with Mother Nature having blessed us with postcard perfect weather.

Introductory divers from Passions of Paradise had 20 metres visibility at the Fish Market dive site. © Dive The Reef They saw juvenile maori wrasse, huge schools of fusiliers, nudibranchs and were even lucky enough to spot a troop of flat worms swimming above the reef.

Certified divers on board Reef Magic were blowing a few bubbles at Saxon reef when a giant Manta Ray sliced right through the middle of the stunned group. The trio could hardly believe the ray had dared to come so close!

Tusa have also reported a variety of different rays out on the Barrier Reef this week. Skipper Jason took certified and intro divers to Hastings reef where they were treated to sightings of bull rays, blue spotted lagoon rays and sting rays.

The weather over the weekend should remain much the same, with slight SE - NE winds barely ruffling the smallest feathers. With the weather conditions being as great as they are, get out diving on the reef this weekend.

(C) Pro Dive Cairns The weekly reef report is written by Sue-Anne Chapman of Pro Dive Cairns, who compiles them from the many conversations she has with divers, dive instructors, captains, and others in the Cairns dive community. The report is published weekly in the Cairn Post, the local daily paper and appears here thanks to the courtesy of Pro Dive Cairns.
